By Susana deOliveira
Web safe fonts are typefaces that come pre-installed as default fonts on the majority of computers and devices, regardless of operating system. Creating a web safe font stack gives us the best chance of having our text appear as intended. And the following fonts are the best web safe fonts for HTML and CSS:
- Arial (sans-serif) is ranked #1 in use on the Web.Designed by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders, released by Monotype in 1982. And Helvetica, was designed in 1957 by Swiss typedesigners Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann.

Source: CSS Font Stack, a complete collection of web safe CSS font stacks.
There are no 100% completely web safe fonts. There is always a chance that a font is not found or is not installed properly. Therefore, it is very important to always use fallback fonts as serif, sans-serif, monospace, cursive and fantasy. This means that we should add a list of similar "backup fonts" in the font-family property. If the first font does not work, the browser will try the next one, and the next one, and so on. Always end the list with a generic font family name.
But at the beginning, when I started, I didn't know all this. The first sources I used were for submiting an application with a game, which served as an exam for obtaining a scholarship. I had only been studying for three months and didn't know much. The professors suggested the following sources:
Google Fonts
A computer font and web font service.
font-family: "Lato", sans-serif;
Lorem Ipsum
Designed by Łukasz Dziedzic. 1
Lato means “Summer” in Polish and it is a sans serif typeface family started in the summer of 2010. Classical proportions, particularly in the uppercase, give the letterforms familiar harmony and elegance, and combine with a sleek treatement that feels contemporary without being trendy. Semi-rounded details feel warm, while the underlying structure provides stability and seriousness.
“Serious but friendly, with the feeling of the Summer”, said Łukasz.Lato is featured in more than 24,7 million websites.
font-family: "Monoton", cursive;
Lorem Ipsum
Designed by Vernon Adams. 2
Monoton is a contemporary take on metalpress fonts like, for example, 'Prisma' (originally designed in 1931 by Rudolf Koch). Monoton is a pure display webfont designed to be used at font sizes above 30 points. Monoton has been designed to be used freely across the internet by web browsers on desktop computers, laptops and mobile devices.
Monoton is featured in more than 134,000 websites.
font-family: "Roboto", sans-serif;
Lorem Ipsum
Designed by Christian Robertson. 3
Roboto has a dual nature. It has a mechanical skeleton and the forms are largely geometric. At the same time, the font features friendly and open curves. While some grotesks distort their letterforms to force a rigid rhythm, Roboto doesn’t compromise, allowing letters to be settled into their natural width. This makes for a more natural reading rhythm more commonly found in humanist and serif types.
Roboto is featured in more than 500 million websites.
Unlike web safe fonts, the web fonts don't come pre-installed on the user's system. The browser downloads them when rendering the web page and then applies them to the text. The main disadvantage of using web fonts is that they slow down the website's loading time.
